Loved this! Also, I totally relate to the sad and lonely feeling that going on summer break or Christmas break would evoke in me as a kid and to a lesser degree as an adult.

The last lines of this book are basically some kind of religion to me—reading them never gets old and I feel something different each time. A few years ago I became unusually obsessed with the idea of spending our summer in Maine. I think I wanted away from that "juggle of tasks" and the slow ticking days of summer at Camp Mom. My husband, perplexed, asked me what it was about Maine and after thinking about it for a few days I said, "children's books." Thinking of Wise Brown and Cooney and McCloskey (and there must be others?), what it is about fantastic children's lit and "this wonderful wild place?"

Thank you, as always, for such a compelling and thoughtful read.

We came across The Little Island in a bookstore a couple of years ago and it’s consistently one of my daughter’s (3) favorite books. She loves the cat part, as do I! I love the change. Thank you for this, this was lovely to read.

Thanks, Maxine! I had fun writing this one. It started as something totally different—but then Brown took over again!
