While going through my collection of stunning picture books by the writer and illustrator Donald Crews, I found that I owned multiple copies of two of his books: Ten Black Dots (1968) and Rain (1978). I immediately thought of you, my Moonbow readers, who love vintage kids’ books (and free stuff, because who doesn’t love free stuff?).
I’m going to send both copies to one lucky subscriber.

This is my copy of Ten Black Dots, one of my prized possessions. It’s one of the most visually stunning concept picture books ever made. Even though my kids have outgrown many of Crews’ books, we still enjoy pulling them out and admiring their gorgeous graphic elements and poetic sensibilities. Recently, after reading Crews’ Freight Train (1978) — which won the Caldecott Honor — my son clapped, HE CLAPPED, that’s how beautiful that book is, and I feel that way when I read Ten Black Dots.
One of the beautiful spreads in Rain (1978), written by Robert Kalan and illustrated by Donald Crews.
Taylor, thanks to you The Moon Jumpers is one of my girls’ most requested books to read. You’ve got a knack for selecting the most beautifully designed, well written, intelligent books. These look incredible. Throwing the dice for a shot at them for my girls!
Rain is a very special and beloved book for me. My Grandma and I would read it together often when I was little. While she has passed now, her memory lives on in so many ways but especially when I think of that book.
