Creativity as an Antidote to Despair
An encouraging message for artists
Are you feeling depressed by the state of the world? Are you scared for our future? Is anxiety making it hard for you to write, paint, sing, dance, or simply focus? Yeah, me too. My faith in creativity as an antidote to despair is wavering. Thankfully, there are good people who can sense when you need words of encouragement.
This past spring, after I wrote about my struggles, I received a powerful letter in the mail from Claudia Zoe Bedrick of Enchanted Lion Books. She and I have never met, but have connected a few times over our shared admiration of picture books. Her devotion to the art form is incredible. The books she publishes from all around the world are astonishingly beautiful and imaginative.
Reading her letter felt like a hug, and it continues to uplift me during these trying times. I asked her if I could share it because I think the same way about YOU. This community is inspiring and makes me happy. I hope you keep pouring time, love, and passion into your creativity. I will try to do the same.
Dear Taylor,
I was sorry to read on your blog that you’ve been feeling despondent. Please know what a force of creativity your writing is and how great an antidote, as such, to the forces of destruction. Every molecule of thought, care, love, passion, and attention to beauty brings us into a brighter tomorrow. We cannot cede ground to what rends the fabric. We must be constantly mending. Your written voice makes me happy. Please keep the shelves of your spiritual pantry stocked with grains and honey.

I will never stop believing creativity is an antidote to despair. But I do think that *accessing* creativity in dark times is very difficult — and I share your predicament right now.
I agree wholeheartedly with Claudia’s encouragement — what you do here is special, even exceptional, and I hope you keep doing it.
It really is so hard. I think in times like this, using your voice and making art are acts of defiance, and of understanding. I find a lot of comfort in others’ expressions — mostly as proof that as a whole, we haven’t really lost our way.
